Change

This post is not just about all the fun we had over the weekend, but also about change (no this is not a tribute to NObama). I know...dumb joke but maybe Steve thought it was funny?

Steve was traveling again for work earlier in the week (Sunday to Tuesday) and what do you know, whenever he does the house is hit with something and it typically involves a little boy named Zach. It is pointless to begin covering the details because I am just over the drama and we are making some changes, positive changes so the boys can get back to a healthy state. Not to mention Steve and I could surely use a break from the "trauma unit" that our house has turned into. I might as well start employing doctors and nurses on site at the Helland House. Hey, an opportunity for Steve's brother, Gregg...I mean he is an ER Doc. As I was about to disconnect from Steve Sunday night he told me to blog because he knows that brings me a lot of joy. So...I found myself starting to put together the next post.

Our weekend to say the least was awesome. We found ourselves doing a little bit of this and a little bit of that; running errands to Costco, a walk down at the pier followed by lunch with the little guys, to playing roller hockey with our neighbors, and of course the boys playing the role of Daddy's "landscapers". I tell you they have the leaf blower, sweeping techniques, and lawn mowing down to a science.

To begin our weekend Steve and I started off with Friday date night at PF Changs, our favorite. We then eventually made our way over to Steve's coworkers who just rented a place near the ocean in San Clemente. Jason and Melissa both work at DPR and are engaged to be married. Sorry...no pics...night off from that task. :) We stayed a little later than we anticipated (ahem) but it was nice to hang out with good people and since they are close to us now, it gives us the opportunity to become better acquainted!

Saturday was here before you know it and the boys enjoyed spending a lot of time outdoors since the weather was gorgeous. Steve's parents had the boys after school on Friday and after some small talk at the park they found themselves at Walmart picking up a super sized shovel, rake, and hoe. The boys have enjoyed playing with their new set of landscaping tools. After nap, Clay our neighbor, was out with some other neighbor kids playing roller hockey. As the boys looked on, one of the boys (his name Jack and a triplet) stopped by asking if Jack and Zach wanted to play. You thought the boys struck gold they were over to get their skates and sticks in like one second. It was like pulling teeth from a child to get them to stop having fun! :) All they talked about from that point on was the "guy" (Bob, Clay's dad), and the goalie. The goalie was teaching them some tricks of how to get the balls out from the net. The neighbor boys were so polite and cautious as the boys were around the net, teaching them different techniques. Clay spends a lot of time on the ice and man is he good!? Although dad puts the breaks on him playing professionally, I think Clay would hope to trump that thought one day. :)

Steve and I snuck out again for a quick bite to eat Saturday night but we were only gone for at most maybe an hour and a half. Since it was Supermoon night we kept the boys up a little later so we could go outside and see the super sized moon. They particularly enjoyed it because we have always made saying nighty night to the moon and stars part of our bedtime routine.

Sunday was spent running errands and taking them down to the pier. We have not been in such.a.long.time that we thought what a good way to spend the last day with Steve before he left for San Francisco. The boys enjoyed their time and eventually made our way home for nap. The remainder of the day the boys hung out with me and our neighbors and enjoyed some good mommy time. Because we had such an awesome weekend, I was not expecting to witness an eventful evening...with Zach. This is when it all started. Illness struck our house again and this time not good. So much for starting and completing the original post.

As noted in the beginning of the blog, I don't feel the need to go into details, but Steve and I have spent time on the phone with our Pediatrician's office, Nurses affiliated with Children's Hospital of Orange County, as well as a few Directors at the school. If you recall in my post about the boys starting school, we always noted to take one day at a time. That is what we did. I also noted we only want the best for our children. This has always been our focus from day one and remains our focus. With the support of the Teachers and Directors, Steve and I made the decision to remove Jack and Zach from school for a little, getting them back to feeling good again. We knew illness would strike as they got acclimated to a more open environment, but the unfortunate part is how much of it has been ongoing. However, we don't like seeing the boys sick and who would have seen all this on the horizon. No one does. That said the Sr Director at the school has our support and has even informed us she will hold their spot (should we return) until the time is right, which could be 6 months maybe even when they turn 4. It is up to us to make that call. Time will tell. They need a break as we do and feel this is the best decision right now. We are looking for a nanny to take care of our boys and have made some progress with lining up interviews. Steve and I feel blessed to have a good support system at work. Our bosses have been forthcoming about doing what we need to do as they feel bad for what we have endured thus far. Karley and Jon are moving to Oregon as that has been a long time goal of theirs since they are originally from Oregon. I know her Mommy and Daddy are EXCITED. While they will be moving in about two weeks Karley has been very generous to give us some of her time to help care for the boys while we find a longer term solution. It also gives her time to see her love bugs before their final departure. We also want to say thank you to Steve's parents for being here as well as it helps immensely.

This is all bittersweet for us because the boys LOVED being at school. They had so much fun with their peers, doing some great things, learning new challenges, and you could tell they loved their teachers. They would give hugs as they said bye. It was also sad because Steve left work early on Wednesday to get our refund and to pick up the boys' belongings at school. When I got home from work yesterday I had two presents on the counter. I started to get really emotional because the boys at school on Monday made me Mother's Day presents [I have a video clip of them letting me know what Sunday is ;)]. We have memories to hold on to from school, and know they will be back to enjoying time with peers again. First and foremost...here is to being healthy!

Here are some fun Kodak moments of our time over the weekend!!!

I am looking forward to the next few weeks. My mom comes to town AND they boys turn 3 all in a matter of a couple of weeks. Steve and I cannot believe the boys are turning 3! Wow!! We are looking forward to seeing what age 3 has to offer. Age 2 to 3 definitely brought unique challenges.

Love,

Julie and Steve
